SYNOPSIS
In the months that follow the seventy-day citywide covid lockdown, three couples in Shanghai meet to talk, and to manifest their traumas in acts of fantastical violence.
Director Biography
Matthew Baren is a British filmmaker and queer community organiser based in Shanghai. He is a co-founder of CINEMQ, an underground queer cinema collective promoting a broader awareness of queer film and generating discussion on LGBTQ+ experiences and perspectives in China through screen culture. In 2018, he directed the documentary Extravaganza, which goes behind the scenes of a groundbreaking Shanghai drag show.
Director's Statement
When we were finally able to leave our homes after two months locked inside, the feeling was overwhelming, and nothing seemed quite real. Of course, none of this ever happened. Two months of anxiety, depression, sickness, fear, frustration never happened. The city has moved on. This film is about the lingering trauma of lockdown in Shanghai. It’s a comedy, because this is absurd. Shot with an entirely queer cast and crew who lived this.
