SYNOPSIS
Director: Arya ZhangThe story begins with Ruby sleeping with her friend’s boyfriend and being caught by her friend, but she doesn’t care about it.
She sells tulips on the bridge and in the park. She also has a tattoo of a red tulip on her chest.
Back home, she and Mimi spend time together in silence doing illogical things like pulling out their hair, changing tampons, etc.
Later, at a party full of trash-talking friends, Mimi tries to strike up a conversation with her too, and all she wants to do is run away.
She escapes to the park where she sells flowers during the day and feeds the geese. She puts breadcrumbs on her pubic area, and her uterus is eaten to the point of mutilation.
“Good night.” She said.
Director Biography
Yajie (Arya) Zhang was born in Shanghai, China in 1999. She is currently studying at the Columbia College Chicago for her Directing Master Degree. She is an INFP and studied landscape architecture as an undergraduate, so she focuses more on the spiritual connection between people and nature. She is good at using fiction to express the relationship between characters and the times. Her works are quirky, bold in their use of color, and very literary in their narrative structure.
Director's Statement
The initial inspiration for the film came from a dream in which two black geese were shamelessly eating rice on the floor of a toilet, and a young lady was lying in a pool of blood, as if she were sleeping. It was a very absurd scene, but I felt an intense sadness that haunted me long after I woke up. I’m sure there are many people like me who are searching for different possibilities in life, as frustrating as the possibilities are. We try to find answers by exploring relationships, but relationships only confuse people. I named the girl Ruby. She spends this life with passionate colors. Her talent, beauty, and mystery leave a strong mark on the world. She lives lonely, and the love of men and women for her, or what they think love is, is like a prison cage keeping her from herself. Ruby has a lot of problems, but she is vivid and full of life. She bleeds, and is sincere enough to return to the land in her own way without compromising in the process of building a connection. I sincerely wish that the youth of today can live their own colors and not be beaten down by the barriers that separate people from each other. Here we go.
