SYNOPSIS
Ho Yuk tells the story of the fantasies, dreams, tears, and fears of four women living in post-colonial Hong Kong. Chan Kwok Chan works as a stripper in cyberspace who suffers from frequent headaches. Her only solace is spending time with a Mainlander migrant prostitute who appears contented and optimistic. Power businesswoman Nicole has money and authority, but she indulges in cyberpornography to alleviate her insomnia. Odd job woman Zero is poverty-stricken but is determined to get ahead. The lives and desires of these four women eventually manifest and intertwine with one another amid Hong Kong’s disappearing city spaces.
Ho Yuk (Let’s Love Hong Kong) is the debut narrative feature of scholar and filmmaker Yau Ching. The film won the Critics’ Grand Prize for Fiction at Figueira da Foz International Film Festival, Portugal in 2002.
Director Biography
Yau Ching (born 1966, Hong Kong) is a writer, filmmaker, moving image artist, scholar, and educator. An important figure in pushing the development of moving image in Hong Kong, Yau was a member of Hong Kong—based new media art organisation Videotage at its founding stages. Over the past thirty years, Yau has created ten moving image works and four feature films, expressing her ongoing exploration of home, gender, and history.
